The Board recently (November, 2017) sought clarification from the City and County of Honolulu as to whether short-term rentals (less than 30 days) are permitted at Waikiki Lanais. In response to this inquiry, the City and County of Honolulu has advised short term rentals are not permitted at Waikiki Lanais.

The Board previously sent a notification by mail to all owners in December advising as to the City’s position that short term rentals are not permitted at Waikiki Lanais. The Board is now exploring how to identify violations and end this illegal practice. In the interim, please be advised of the following:
- If you are an owner renting a unit in Waikiki Lanais for less than 30 days, you are advised this practice is in violation of City and County of Honolulu Revised Ordinance Section 21-9.80-5.
- If you are a property management company or vacation rental website advertising short-term rentals in Waikiki Lanais, you are advised such short-term rentals are illegal. Licensed property management companies and real estate professionals risk possible disciplinary action against their license by the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs should you be found have engaged in illegal practices.
- If you are a licensed real estate sales agent or broker representing to prospective purchasers that units atWaikiki Lanais may be utilized for short-term rentals, such misrepresentation may subject you to possible disciplinary action by the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
